Abstract

The A+STEM summer camp introduced high school students to design thinking and architectural model design while integrating STEM concepts. Participants engaged in hands-on activities aimed at revitalizing downtown Lubbock, Texas, focusing on empathy, ideation, prototyping, and testing as a design thinking process. Under the mentorship of Texas Tech University undergraduate students, camp participants developed architectural models addressing community challenges, which were later showcased at the Texas Tech University Museum. The camp successfully enhanced students’ design thinking, STEM and architectural knowledge, skills, and interest in architecture while fostering a community engagement mindset. Proposed improvements include extending the camp duration and involving public officials to enrich the learning experience and promote real changes within their communities.
