The Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement is pleased to announce the publication of a special issue edited by Geoffrey Maruyama, Andrew Furco, and Shannon O. Brooks on "The Role of Community Engagement in the Educational Success of Underrepresented Students." This issue focuses on a 5-year research project involving a research team from six universities supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) program. Articles in this special issue present a series of quantitative and/or qualitative studies examining how community engagement involvement during college years affects students' academic progress, retention, degree completion, and other educational outcomes, with a key focus on studying the effects of these diverse community engagement programs on underrepresented students, including an article authored by underrepresented students.
